Why oh WHY is the Toronto V Festival during the first week of school?!??? That line-up keeps getting better, but there is no way I could get out of the first week, nor could I afford another gig jaunt only a few weeks after my Seattle/West Coast journey. Ugh, life is tough.

I really hope the massive amounts of British TV I watch is less annoying than my roommate watching tech TV and talk shows from Danish television. Seriously?

Recently, while studying for British History I came across Edmund Burke, the father of Conservatism, who happens to have the same name as my 4x Great Grandfather, so I decided to see if by some small chance they were the same person. It turned out they weren't, but in the process I discovered that my family has a lot more history than I knew about previously. Apparently the German/Irish/British side of my family is actually German/British/Dutch, and have been in the United States for over thirteen generations. My family has fought in literally every war on these shores, including the French and Indian, Revolutionary, and War of 1812.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of info I was able to dig up was that my 10x Great Grandfather, a Van Keuren, was one of the directors of the Dutch West Indies Company, and therefore was involved in the buying of Manhattan from the Native Americans. Another relative, this time a Van Siclen, owned land in what would become Brooklyn, and developed the use of the greenhouse in America, and encouraged the growth of lettuce for the first time here in the US. That particular family also has a street in Brooklyn named for them, Van Siclen Avenue.

It's weird how information like this was lost over the generations, as my father certainly had no idea we were in any way Dutch, and though my grandmother recently passed away, I'm fairly certain she didn't know either.

I mentioned to my roommate my excitement over "Suicide in the Trenches" appearing in my history book, to which she immediately started singing the words "suicide in the trenches" over and over to the tune of "We Didn't Start the Fire." No explanation was given as to where this connection came from.

Why was Fall Out Boy allowed to cover "Beat It?" And why did they have to desecrate Arrested Development by having Buster in the video? Yucky.

Why oh why did "The Doctor's Daughter" have to premiere right in the middle of finals week?!?!?! I can't concentrate on anything right now because of the constant need to check for spoilers, re-watch the trailer, daydream up possibilities...it's really become a problem. I don't think I can wait until Saturday, though I know that now I've built it up this much it will surely disappoint.

How much do I love my major?

Well, for an extra credit project I have the opportunity to write fan fiction. Yes, fan fiction in college. It can be for any television show I choose, and cover any topic...So naturally I will be doing a Doctor Who Jack/Doctor slash, though the more I think about it the more I'm not so sure. They ruined Jack's character so much in Torchwood that I don't know if I want to even deal with him. Maybe instead I'll write something that redeems him and returns good ol' Jack to his orgy-having, alien-fucking, flirtatious glory days. I need ideas.

I didn't think it was possible that this year could top last year's gig attendance on the awesome scale. However, a few recent additions to my calendar, in addition to the Pete incident mean that it's already getting close.

As of right now I have tickets to:
Tom Petty
Stevie Wonder
The Kills
Foals
Paolo Nutini
Flight of the Conchords
Adam Green
These New Puritans
Lollapalooza (Radiohead, The Raconteurs, Bloc Party, Wilco, Gnarls Barkley, MGMT, CSS, Black Lips, Girl Talk, BSS, etc)
JARVIS COCKER at Pitchfork

and the biggest and best show of the year?

OASIS and Ryan Adams in Seattle at the end of August. And did I mention we have 3rd row center tickets? NOEL GALLAGHER IS MY HERO.
